• Tree Roots: Tree roots always seek out the closest source of water, and if you have some trees on your property, the closest source may be your sewer line. Over years, the root system can penetrate the line and begin to spread, eventually severely restricting the flow of water. If you are experiencing frequent sewer backups, this may be the reason.
• Corrosion: Sewer lines are made of copper, for the most part, which is why they last so long. If you have formaldehyde or chlorine particles in the soil around your line, though, you may have a corrosion problem. These particles eat away at the copper pipe, eventually opening up leaks that can contaminate the surrounding area. If you have pools of foul–smelling water forming in your front yard, you may have a leak in your sewer line.
