SOME CONTAMINANTS WE TEST FOR

While you may not know exactly what your Embrich Plumbing Co expert is looking for, these are some of the common contaminants and/or reasons we test water:

  • Determine the hardness of the water – hardness of water refers to the level of mineralization in your water. High mineralization isn’t bad for you, but it can be bad for your plumbing system.
  • Determine the pH levels – pH levels refer to the level of acidity in your home’s water. Healthy drinking water should fall into a "neutral" zone, which is 7 on the pH scale (which runs from 0 to 14). If your water is less than 7 it is considered too acidic and over 7 too base.
  • Presence of total coliforms – coliforms are bacterial microbes that come from the digestive systems of mammals. These microbes can be found in a lot of places, including ground surfaces. Coliform microbes can’t harm you, but a high total coliform count can indicate the presence of microbes that can, including viruses, bacteria and parasites.
  • Presence of fecal coliforms/E. Coli – the name of this one is enough to make you recoil. This type of coliform come directly from the stool of both animals and humans. E. coli is included in this group. While fecal coliforms and e. coli aren’t harmful themselves, a test indicating high levels of them usually means there are other dangerous microbes in your water.
